Adding pictures
If you have a digital camera, a scanner or some other access to digital images,
then you can add them from your machine to a travelog entry. You can do this
when you first
write the entry or you can do it at a later date from the Add
Picture to Entry page.
Be aware: this is easily the most likely part of the system
to break, but don't worry if it does, it won't break anything. Pay attention
to the
Limitations section below.
Adding a picture
- Use the Browse button to locate and select an image on your computer.
If you want to put an image from another website into your travelog, you
must download it to your computer first.
- Give your picture a name. This will be visible when the image is loading,
will be read to people viewing your travelog with a screen
reader and will of course appear next to the image when viewing
its associated entry.
- Use the
Add picture
button, or if you want to, the Add another!
button.
Limitations
There are some limitations with the picture system that it helps to be aware
of. Some of these are technical, some political.
- You must use either JPEG
images (with a names that end in .jpg like sunset.jpg or ) or PNG
images (like golden.png). For almost all photographic purposes, JPEG is
the correct sort of image to use, as it tends to result in much smaller
file sizes than other formats. You cannot use GIF images
because GIF
technology is controlled by the
man, and Travelog likes to stay away from the man. PNG
is a freely available and in many respects superior image format.
- You can only add pictures from the computer you are using. You can't put
in a web address, and doing so will result in an error.
- Pictures can't be very big. As a general guide, please keep them below
1MB. Very big pictures will take a long time for Travelog to process,
a very long time for readers to download, and may possibly crash the image
processor, which will result in a garbled web page and possibly a messed
up looking travelog. If this happens, mail
me and I'll dig into the database and fix it for you.
