Last day of touring

Date: 10 Nov 2006, 10:31 Place: La Fortuna, Costa Rica

Mood: Happy but Heineken hungover

So far in this trip we've either been on tours or we've entertained ourselves: the snorkelling trip was a tour, at Jaco we did our own thing, the rainforest walk was a tour, at Tamarindo we entertained ourselves. Yesterday we did a little of both.

In the morning, we took a taxi to the La Fortuna waterfall, which is a 60m drop down the side of a rainforest cliff. More than spectacular, it was well worth the trek down the side of the cliff face to get to the pool and swim in the rocky, churning pool. There were signs saying not to swim under the waterfall, but you'd have to make a heroic effort to get near it, such is the force of the water pushing you away from the bottom. And, unlike all the seawater I've been in, this water was cold. It was great fun, although I slipped on algae and banged my shin on a rock so hard I heard the knock noise through my skeleton! A little way downstream there was a sandy bank next to the river, with fish to frighten and stones to skip, so we warmed and cooled and warmed and cooled until we were ready to head off.

The afternoon saw George and Dave fret about taking a tour, due to a fear of heights and a lack of cash respectively. I got arsey about this, and they came on the holiday's final tour, a canopy tour. This consisted of a series of cables, or zip lines, through the rainforest canopy, along which we hurtled while looking at the fabulous flora about the place. Being a rainforest, well, it rained, and on the 3rd line we were flying blind, as we literally couldn't see the end of the line. Each of us in turn careened into the buffer rope and then huddled agaisnt the tree to take shelter from the rain. Being in the highest tree in the forest meant the worst exposure to the rain, and when I heard thunder and noticed the metal platform we were standing on... I became more than a little scared. The storm passed over without any lightning nearby, and mud-spattered we carried on down the lines. The leather mitt we had to use as a brake didn't work so well on wet lines, and to be honest I stopped braking as soon as I saw I didn't really need to. More speed equals more fun right? Especially 80m up on a Heath-Robinsonesque contraption. Exhilirated, we endured the trailer ride back to base and got a good hunger on. I had seabass fried in garlic butter which was oily but very tasty. Dave's steak was, as always, excellent.
