After the rainforest experience, we went back to the hotel - the extremely friendly and very cheap off season Hotel Arenal Jireh - and vegged out. I instructed Stephen and George that I wasn't going to take any part in arranging anything else, and so they booked a taxi to the best local hot springs. The very best part about volcanic activity is hot springs, and these were amazing. I haven't seen anything so contrived since Sun City when I was 21, but despite the artifice, it was hugely enjoyable traipsing around what felt like jungle trails after dark, looking for new pools. There was a 40 degree river running through the middle of the resort, feeding the various pools, and in places there were hot waterfalls which we sat under and got a free pounding massage. And then, just around another corner was a wet bar serving cocktails. In honour of my friend Mat I had a BBC, only to realise after buying it that with its ingredients being Baileys, banana and coconut milk, it was the weakest one on the menu. I should've gone for the Long Island Ice Tea, which is the way to play catchup, as everyone who's arrived late to a club with nowhere else to go knows! We frolicked and gambolled and took foolish photos in the water, probably annoyed the posh American tourists with their whiny voices and vast expanses of rolling flesh, and definitely annoyed the staff as we sought out the areas beyond the 'restricted access' signs, and it was all a bloody good laugh. Arriving back, we went to the poshest restaurant in town, dressed in shorts and flip flops and ordered the cheapest eats on the menu sitting at the best table. And then back at the hotel, feeling so relaxed and unwound, I fell asleep as if switched off at the mains.
