SKIING ROCKS!!! (AND I'M GOOD)

Date: 3 Dec 2002, 19:45 Place: INTERLAKEN, Switzerland

Mood: Overjoyed and STAYING AGAIN

There is nothing but gorgeous countryside in this country. The whole trip to Interlaken was amazing. So much to see. By the time we arrived in Interlaken it was dark so you couldn't see any mountains. Having arrived on Friday night, we were all keen to get out and about in the morning to check the price of hiring ski's and gear. The room that we were in had 8 beds. The other 6 beds were all guys who were keen and set to go boarding for the first day of the ski season opening on Saturday. 6am they were up and ready to go although the day was expected to be fairly cloudy. Eric and I just couldn't believe the sight of the mountains that are all around interlaken. We mostly just spent the day looking around then went to the cheapest place and hired all of the gear we needed for skiing on Sunday. We also met some other girls from the same hostel, so after the other guys came back from a reasonable day of skiing, we all decided to ski together the next day. It was an early night so that everyone could be up and about again for another very early start.

Good morning Sunday!! 7am, Alarms rang. 7:40 everyone was at the bus stop ready to ski. First we took a small train through the mountains to the ski area. Then on the Gondola and up into the snow. I could say nothing else but "OH MY GOD!!!!" I could not believe just how magnificent the Alps could look. It was only just 10am so the sun had only just collected the gorgeous white peaks of the mountains. The snow seemed to glow on top. Then a little further up the sunshine just lit up the whole ski area. It was picture PERFECT.

Unlike any other day for the last week, and any day since, there was hardly a cloud in sight. Perfect conditions for skiing with some fresh snow having fallen the night before. I was extremely bad at first, having fallen over every 20 meters for about the first hour. Then it just CLICKED!! Something suddenly felt just right and then I realised how similar it was to water skiing (which I've only done a couple of times). After that I just cut sick and had an absolute ball. I was going over small jumps and fair hooking it down the slopes. Yeah sure I stuffed up quite a lot, but that was half the fun of it. Flying down a hill, knowing that I wouldn't make it around the next turn, and just plowing myself into the nearest pile of snow. Face and goggles covered in snow and having to wipe it all away before I could even see anything .... How cool (No pun intended)!! The only problem I had all day was actually stopping. I'd come flying down a hill, over a small ridge that would launch you over a couple of small jumps, and then brake hard as best that I could. I would then inevitably end up having one ski bite the snow, get launched 3 foot high and sideways into the air, arms and legs everywhere, then go sliding to an otherwise gracefull stop (face full of snow and all). WHAT A BALL!!! What a place to go for my first time skiing. Perfect day, Perfect slopes and Perfect Scenery.

I would like so much to go back and do it all again although I know that the budget can't quite afford it. I haven't been able to bring myself to leave this place. It is so great. In fact in the last 2 days since we went skiing, the snow has been getting lower and lower. In fact yesterday morning when I got up, even the really small hills surrounding interlaken had snow on top of them. Then today the snow was even lower down. I wouldn't be surprised if there was snow in the centre of town when I get up tomorrow. Guess we'll all just have to wait and see.

Speaking of seeing thought, you have to have a look at these magical pictures of Interlaken. DAMN I SO WISH THAT EVERYONE COULD BE HERE TO EXPERIENCE IT AS WELL. I miss everyone mostly for that. Not that I want to be home, I just want everyone else to be here too. http://www.interlakentourism.ch

The skiing area that we went skiing on was called "First". Go to the below websight, look at the picture of the area and then click on first. http://www.jungfrauwinter.ch/pages/english/PST/isp.php?page=PST_index&data=F
