So today I took on a little challenge! I decided to take on “THE WORLDS MOST DANGEROUS ROAD”, which is exactly as it describes, this road is just a dirt road that can only just fit one car on it, with a sheer cliff of up to 600mtrs down one side, in total there had been over 200 deaths a year on the 21mile stretch of road, and I 6 yrs 11 of them were mountain bikers attempting the “WMDR”. We had to get up at 6 to be at the café for 7 were the tour group were picking us up, after the hour drive to the drop point we were given our kit which consisted of helmet, gloves, reflective jacket and a bike, had a ride around to get used to the disk brakes and then head off. The first 20ish miles was on a tarmac road, to get used to the bikes properly there was a few uphill bits which everyone found quite hard as we were know at 4800mts above sea level so there was very little oxygen, once we got to the beginning of the WMDR or guide gave our bikes a check over and gave us all a safety talk about the road and what to do and not to do if anything happened, there are a lot of tour gropes offering this ride and gravity (the group we chose) are the first and original group, plus the only ones that offer FULL rescue experiment. Once we had the safety talk we set off now at first there are lots of trees blocking your view but as you get around the first corner you seriously SHIT YOURSELF because all of a sudden on your left there is this massive valley in front of you and a sharp right, at this point you are going about 15mph as you go around the corner its then that you spot the 600mtr sheer drop to your left!!!!!! and all of a sudden your looking down this cliff, then you realise that coz your not concentrating on the road you start heading towards the edge, it then that you realise that you really have to concentrate if your going to get down this road alive!. After we had done the first section our guide tells us about some of the reasons for the such specific rules of death road!. The first rule is ALWAYS get of your bike on the right hand side, now this is not normal and he explains that everyone gets off on the left because the chain is on the left, now the reason you must get on on the right is so that your bike in between you and the cliff edge and he explains that there was a French girl 2 years ago that got off on the wrong side and as she stepped back to let a car go by she stepped of the cliff, she fell 500 mtrs and was dead before they managed to get her back on to the road! He also explained about the two German guys who were “pretending” to shove each other of the cliff, which was funny until his mate pushed a little too hard and pushed his mate off the cliff! The guy was rescued but was in a coma for 6 months. After our guide had told us these accidents it made it more clear that we had to concentrate on the road or there could be a nasty accident, once we set off again the next stage took us through two waterfalls and I actually mean THROUGH them when you came out the other side you were soaking wet, not that it mattered much coz the speeds we were riding you soon dried off. All the way down the road all you could see was the sheer drop to you left one of the other stages the was a river that we had to ride through, we had to make sure we had good speed going trough otherwise the bike would stop on the rocks in the water and we'd fall off!. There were two “villages” that we rode through if that's what you could call them, one was made up of about 10 buildings (clay ones) and the other of only about 3 buildings, but there was still stalls selling food and drinks. While riding down the road you get a massive adrenalin rush the whole time. Once we got to the bottom we were able to have a shower and lunch in a Monkey Rescue hotel! Where there were lots of monkeys trying to steal your food from your plate, there were also Macaw parrots and parrots that looked like Tucker (a pet parrot we used to have), while sat trying to eat the monkeys would come from nowhere and steal your food, it was very funny indeed, after we ate and played around with the monkeys we headed back to La Paz.
