Cajas with Ryan

Date: 11 Mar 2008, 22:54 Place: Cajas National Park, Ecuador

Mood: Happy

The trip to Cajas with Ryan was almost the same as the trip with Claudia except for two things first of all we climbed to the top of two high peaks and second I nearly died!!!, when we arrived we dumped our bags in the refuge and decided to climb one of the peaks on the other side of the lake before it got dark, so we made our way around the lake and started the climb up the mountain, it took us a good few hours to reach the summit and at the top we had some amazing views, while at the top we had a few snacks and decided to head back down before it got dark, it must have been 15 mins to work our way across the peak to the path that lead the way down but as we started down the sun set and within 10mins we lost all light and in the as we were in the mountains there was no light at all so we had to try to follow the path in the pitch black we were going very slow as we could not really see the path, but luckily Ryan had his headlight, it helped a little but on the mountain side it still was very hard to see the path, the problem was that the paths on the mountain side sometimes came quite close to the edge of some cliff sides from 10ft to 100ft drops if not more, so we were being very careful while walking along these paths, while we were walking the path seemed to vanish, there was absolutely no light to see by, and while we were trying to find the path I slipped and fell I must have fell about 20 / 25ft, I fell on to a ledge when I looked up I could not see the light from Ryan I could only hear him shouting to see if I was OK, luckily I was, if I had gone another 6 foot more forward there was another cliff that was a lot higher, I was very shook up and my legs and hands were shaking a little but I was OK. I shouted up to Ryan to let him know that I was OK and started to make my way across to a section were Ryan was able to climb down, I think it must have took us another 3 / 4 hours to make our way back to the refuge which in the day would have took 2 hours max, when we got back we was so tired that all we did was have sommert quick to eat and went to bed.

The next day we climbed the other large peak but this tile it was morning so there was no chance that it was going to get dark on us!!! once we got to the top of this peak we had an even more amazing view for miles around! All you could see as far as the eye could see was mountains, mountains and more mountain, so we sat down, got comfortable and had lunch took some pictures and then headed back down to the refuge, collected our bags and headed back to Cuenca.
