Nothing much happens in WA at this time of year. As a rule. Our silly season is December to February and usually punctuated only by Christmas and new year. This year, however, we have the scrappy spectacle of a leadership challenge in the Liberal opposition party. Paul Omedei, the current leader, has threatened to bash anyone who has the gall to challenge him. Such gall is displayed by one Troy Buswell who, a couple of weeks ago, was filmed in parliament, so drunk he could hardly stand and capped off the day “pinging” the bra-strap of a party worker who was standing in front of him and this was after he goosed another male MP. You wouldn’t normally give it any credence but this bloke is almost bound to succeed in his challenge. Extraordinary. More interestingly, India are in Perth for the 3rd test in what has been an acrimonious series thus far. Allegations of racial abuse on the field by both sides, even suggestions that the words Monkey and Bastard have been thrown around. Goodness, whatever next. Australia won their 16th consecutive test but cheated shamefully, India threatened to go home blah, blah, blah, What a bore. Should be a good game though with the WACA turning in a very fast wicket and Australia coming to the match with a pace-only bowling line up. They’ll enjoy that tomorrow as the temperature gets up to 39C. Oh, and by the way, our new rail line has opened running from Perth to Mandurah. It’s a twin track commuter service, all very modern, electrically powered etc. Sadly, as could be expected in any other developed country these days, it is massively late, massively over-budget and massively over-subscribed from day one – standing room only by the time it gets to us anyway, and, of course, covered with graffiti. Doors, windows, inside, outside, stations, platforms, bridges, cycle paths. Everything, completely plastered. Whatever’s going on……?
