Wahey.....we have just finished a 33 hour bus journey from El Calafate in Patagonia to Bariloche, which is in the lake district, a good few hundred miles north. However, the Argentinian buses did live up to expectations and we actually managed to get some kip, albeit not the best kip we have ever had. Col also managed to sqeeze a steak in en route which kept him fairly happy given he has developed a "steak a day" habit.
Apart from our epic bus journey, since the last email we spent 2 or 3 days hiking and camping around the El Chalten area. We saw Fitz Roy, which really is a spectacular peak (see photos) but extreme climbing as we found out when hearing of a French climber who died on his descent only the day before we arrived. We also saw the world`s 7th hardest climb, Cerro Torre......the scenery here was just as awe inspiring as that in Torres del Paine, but it was made even better by the fact that the Fitz Roy area is not so well known yet, and therefor there were hardly any tourists compared to Torres del Paine. I expect in a few years it too will be much busier (and more expensive). So any of you who are keen on your hiking etc....get there in the next couple of years if you can! We also did a Glacier trek on the Torres Glacier, which had spectacular views of Cerro Torre and we all did a bit of ice climbing on the glacier. This was good fun but Col has decided he should stick to skiing....you would have thought he had a velcro tongue on his ascent, so close was his face (and whole body!) to the ice wall. However it provided us all (him included) with a bit of a laugh. Having said this, I dont think my ascent was much more impressive....a couple of photos attached for your amusement.
I have also attached some photos to the previous diary entry so hope it has worked.
Later aligators....
Gillsie and Col x
