the hotels in Siem Reap are great, got a huge bed, air con, hot water and fridge for 13 dollars a night.
Spent the first day around the town looking at smaller temples and walking along the river. In the evening we went to a shadow puppet and childrens dance show.
On the 28th we got up early again to watch sunrise over a look at the Angkor Wat complex. Went to Ta Prohm, as featured in Tomb Raider and posed by the Angelina Jolie tree. A few huge trees are growing over the walls, the roots invade the bricks and the trunks grow from the top of a wall. Saw many other temples, won't list them here. I liked one which had huge faces caved into each tower. Made it to Angkor Wat for sunset. Have wanted to see Angkor Wat for ages, and now lucky enough to have done so.
Early start to see sunrise over Angkor Wat. These long days are tiring us out but want to make the most of our time. Saw a different temple with finer carving in pink sandstone, a few kilometers away from the others. Another temple used to be set in a pond which fed 4 other ponds with different heads for spouts, one was human. For sunset we climbed to the highest point and could see the biggest lake in south east Asia, Tonle Sap , which provides Cambodia with enough fish for itself and export.
The last day at Angkor Wat we revisited the face temple, elephant terrace and did Angkor Wat properly. The famous view of the 5 towers reflected in water was seen, although the water is in only one pond and has to be pumped in. Many walls were covered with bas reliefs and as with other temples had a square layout with platforms getting higher until the main tower was reached. Not allowed up to any of the towers though.
Enjoyed our time in Siem Reap but need a rest now.
That afternoon we got a bus to Phonm Penh.
