I went to my first ever Latin American fútbol game tonight! It was quite exciting because the Viña team was playing against the team from La Serena! I went with Jessica, Paul, and one of Gabriel’s friends (all of whom I have assumed as my own) Fabrizio. It wasn’t very crowded, so don’t imagine a crazy stadium where people are getting trampled, etc. However the fans, though few in number were very spirited! They had sections that just seemed to dance, wave banners, yell, and bang a bass drum the entire game - oh and light big sparklers too! In the end Vina won the game 3-1, but I was a little disappointed by the low scores! I know that’s how soccer, I mean futbol, is - lots of running and kicking and just a few goals. Of course I’m not intending to criticize the sport - I’m sure that many of my faithful readers are very fond of it. It’s just I began to wonder psychologically how a sport with such few “rewards” could have gotten so strongly popular. If futbol IS the world’s sport, then maybe we don’t give the world enough credit for being patient and “long suffering.” To really get involved in a game you have to watch every move - seeing the game as much more than just the goals and final score. The true entertainment lies in all the fancy footwork - and injuries of course! You can easily get bored if you don’t follow the ball as it flys across the astroturf bumping off of heads and shooting from kleats (or kleets).
Fútbol!
